You can expect to laugh at Celine’s humorous take on some songs, cry at the beautiful ballads and be toe tapping to her groove. Celine plays rhythm guitar, occasional bass or ukelele, with a powerhouse vocal performance. She can own the biggest banger, feel the suffering of a blues standard or dial it right back to expose all the sentiment in a ballad, with the charisma and storytelling magnetism to carry even the most sparse song.
Her sets spans blues, folk, roots and americana, she includes covers by women such as Maren Morris, Kasey Chambers, Gillian Welch, Brandy Clark, Michelle Shocked or the Uppity Blues Women, and lesser-known compositions from songwriters such as Bob Dylan, Tom Waits, and bluesman Lloyd Spiegel. These songs are pared back to the essence, with the acoustic instrumentation allowing room for Celine's powerful voice to shine through.
Michael and Celine are very old friends and if you are fortunate enough to get to one of their rare performances, you can tell. The ease with which the two write songs, play and sing together is cemented by decades of collaborating both on and off stage, in their lounge and even on the side of the road in a Christchurch street. Long ago they were flatmates, they are funny together, honest with each other, as an audience you will feel connected and engaged in their comradery. Their set is based around their original and co-written songs. Michael is a captivating performer and songwriter who can hold audiences in the palm of his hand from the first bar of his compelling performances. With decades on stage, a formidable songbook, that would be the envy of even the world’s most renown scribes he balances raw vulnerability with razor-sharp craft, writing songs that cut straight to the heart.
This eclectic South Taranaki based band features the highly experienced Shaun Campbell leading with sharp guitar work and backing vocals, Evan Pimm holding down the groove on bass, Jody Thomas adding the special sauce on trombone, Celine delivers her trademark heavyweight vocals and rhythm guitar. Their set includes originals by Shaun and Celine, classic blues standards, and contemporary covers from the likes of Lloyd Spiegel, Keb Mo’ and Dirtbox Charlie.
